{"id":486,"date":"2020-08-28T19:02:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T19:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onthemovenow.com\/blog\/?p=486"},"modified":"2020-08-28T19:02:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T19:02:13","slug":"downsizing-by-choice-vs-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onthemovenow.com\/blog\/downsizing-by-choice-vs-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Downsizing by choice vs. disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Life is pretty challenging right now.<\/p>\n<p>From pandemic to raging wildfires, 2020 has been one long lesson of the different ways unforeseen circumstances can upend your life.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know what\u2019s coming next, but given what\u2019s come before, it seems prudent to be as prepared as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/\">https:\/\/www.ready.gov<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.readyforwildfire.org\/\">https:\/\/www.readyforwildfire.org<\/a> are two comprehensive sites that outline everything you need to do to be ready for whatever comes next.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not ready to take on disaster preparedness yet, here are few simple things you can do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a video as you walk around your home. Keep a running commentary about any special objects. Open your cabinets and shoot there, too. Be sure to back-up the file in the cloud, so you can have access to it, even if you lose your phone.<\/li>\n<li>Identify, or even make a list of, your most treasured items so that you know what to grab should you need to evacuate your home.<\/li>\n<li>Put all of your important documents \u2013 passport, insurance papers, car title, mortgage notes &#8212; together in one place. Best would be a box or a folder that you can literally grab and go.<\/li>\n<li>Make a plan with family and\/or friends or who you\u2019ll call \u2013 out of your area&#8211; in case of an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Start simplifying your life. Focus on the people and things that matter. Let go of everything else.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can\u2019t control what happens. All we can do is be as prepared as possible to face whatever comes.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let a disaster do your downsizing.
