{"id":249,"date":"2016-05-01T00:00:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-01T00:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onthemovenow.com\/blog\/?p=249"},"modified":"2016-05-01T00:00:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-01T00:00:27","slug":"giving-it-away-is-the-way-to-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onthemovenow.com\/blog\/giving-it-away-is-the-way-to-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Giving It Away is the Way to Go!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Before Europeans arrived and literally outlawed the practice, the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest\u00a0celebrated major life events with a\u00a0<em>Potlach<\/em>\u00a0ceremony &#8212; where they would give away their goods.<\/p>\n<p>The settlers were shocked, but the First Nation peoples actually ran their whole society on a gift economy \u2013\u00a0where the \u201crichest\u201d were the ones who gave the most away.<\/p>\n<p>We live in a very different way. But if you are burdened by mountains of stuff you no longer use, you may find that giving it away is a great way to go. Here are some ways to give generously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have a Garage Sale where everything is free.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to advertise it that way. But when you see someone is genuinely interested in\u00a0something you have, experience the joy of giving it as a gift. You get to lighten your load, and\u00a0brighten someone\u2019s life in one simple transaction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have your own family Potlach potluck<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bring your family and friends together and gift each of them with something that\u2019s been<br \/>\nImportant to you. Let them know what it\u2019s meant to you, and why you chose it for them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Find a group\/organization that needs what you have.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may be surprised what good you can do with stuff you think no one would want.<br \/>\nGot an excess of old office supplies? Pads of paper, file folders, pencils and markers? A teacher\u00a0at a local school will probably be able to put all of that to good use. A retirement community would\u00a0likely be very grateful for your stacks of magazines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While you may have much more than you need, someone who isn\u2019t able to provide for their\u00a0family may live right next door. According to this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2016\/05\/my-secret-shame\/476415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>\u00a0in Forbes, nearly half of Americans could\u00a0have trouble paying $400 for an emergency. Let friends know what you\u2019re getting rid of and ask\u00a0if they know someone who might be able to use it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Call for pickup.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have a lot of stuff and you are ready to let it go, there are several Bay Area organizations\u00a0that will come and take it away.
