It&#8217;s a buyer&#8217;s market &#8212; and there aren&#8217;t that many buyers. (Read: You&#8217;re going to get a lot less for your things than you expected.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s buyers are \u00a0young. Their lifestyles and tastes have changed<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe younger generation wants\u00a0<u>well-made<\/u>,\u00a0<u>practical<\/u>\u00a0and\u00a0<u>useful<\/u>\u00a0things. In place of antiques and heirlooms, their preference is for simplified, streamlined design. Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware offer the looks that today\u2019s buyers love.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hot on the millennials list? Things from the 1950\u2019s. These things sell easily:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Mid-century modern furniture.\u00a0 Teak, Danish modern, especially things from famous \u00a0designers &#8212; Saarinen, Nelson, Eames, Noguchi.<\/li>\n<li>Lamps\/lighting, rugs, and d\u00e9cor that fit in the 50\u2019s \u201cstratospheric\u201d design aesthetic.<\/li>\n<li>Easy-care dinnerware and glassware that can go into the dishwasher and microwave.<\/li>\n<li>Good quality, well-known mid-century kitchenware, such as\u00a0 KitchenAid mixers, 1950&#8217;s\u00a0Heath dinnerware, Jensen flatware, cooking objects by Dansk.<\/li>\n<li>Sterling silver, especially when beautifully crafted.\u00a0 Tiffany, Jensen, Gorham.<\/li>\n<li>Vintage clothing from the 1950s-70s (think \u201cMad Men\u201d) with original labels.<\/li>\n<li>Chunky costume jewelry, particularly if by a designer like Chanel or Dior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>One proviso: items must be of\u00a0<u>fine quality<\/u>\u00a0and in\u00a0<u>excellent condition<\/u>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Today\u2019s savvy buyers are brand-driven. They look for the designer\u2019s name\/label on\u00a0glass, silver, clothing, jewelry, furniture.<\/li>\n<li>Condition is extremely important.\u00a0 Items that are stained, scratched, cracked, repaired,\u00a0marred in any way may have little value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>The treasures in a home often are not the fine furniture, antiques or even art.
