Less Stuff = More Happiness!

If it’s true that the things you own end up owning you, it’s easy to see how having less stuff can lead to a feeling of greater freedom, and more happiness.

Whether you’re downsizing as a choice, or as a necessity, here are some ways of sharing your wealth that will make it a pleasurable experience for all.

  1. Invite friends over to get their special gift.

Fill your dining room table with things you love, but no longer use or need. Invite friends you know who would appreciate something special from you. When they arrive, invite them to take whatever they’d like from the table.

  1. Get some help from the grandkids by making it a game.

Do you have enough linens to last several generations? Decide how many blankets, sheets, towels, tablecloths and napkins you actually need and use. Then, invite your favorite grandkids, nieces or nephews to help you count and sort through the rest. Ask them to help you decide what organization/s should get the rest. You might even want to go and deliver it together, so you can both appreciate the difference your donation will make.

  1. Have a “value-based” family auction.

Sentimental value often outweighs the monetary value of the things you own. And you may be surprised to find out that grandma’s green cocktail glasses are actually a family treasure.

Keep the peace by holding a family auction. Ask each member of your family to make a list of the items they value most – with a reason why for each. If two or more people want a particular item, each one shares why they believe they value the item most. The person with the most compelling story wins.

Downsizing is a way of celebrating the good things you’ve had – and making room for new good times to come. If you’d be happy to downsize but you know you could use some help, call on Senior Move Manager like Maria Quinby of OnTheMoveNow.com. You’ll be happy you did!
